Nestled peacefully on a rocky hill in Ha Thuy 1 Hamlet, Chi Cong Commune, Tuy Phong District, Phuoc An Pagoda is one of the ancient temples rich in history and spirituality. Founded in the 23rd year of Canh Hung (1762) by Venerable Chon Dinh Lieu Dat, the pagoda has undergone several restorations and has been preserved as a sacred destination for Buddhist followers and visitors. History of Formation and Development According to the genealogy of the Nguyen Phuoc family, Venerable Chon Dinh, whose secular name was Nguyen Phuoc Hoi, was originally from Thanh Hoa. Nestled peacefully on a rocky hill in Ha Thuy 1 Hamlet, Chi Cong Commune, Tuy Phong District, Phuoc An Pagoda is one of the ancient temples rich in history and spirituality. Founded in the 23rd year of Canh Hung (1762) by Venerable Chon Dinh Lieu Dat, the pagoda has undergone several restorations and has been preserved as a sacred destination for Buddhist followers and visitors.

History of Formation and Development

According to the genealogy of the Nguyen Phuoc family, Venerable Chon Dinh, whose secular name was Nguyen Phuoc Hoi, was originally from Thanh Hoa. Along with his two brothers, Nguyen Phuoc Hanh and Nguyen Phuoc My, he migrated to this land and chose Da Bo Hill to build a small thatched hut for meditation, naming it Phuoc An Pagoda. Later, the pagoda was moved about 300 meters westward, and in the year Ky Dau (1894), it was firmly built at its current location with stone walls and yin-yang roof tiles.

Notably, in 1909, during his journey to find a way to save the country, President Ho Chi Minh (then known as Nguyen Tat Thanh) visited Phuoc An Pagoda. Here, he was cared for by Venerable Buu Hien while waiting for Truong Gia Mo to take him to teach at Duc Thanh School – Phan Thiet.

Over the years, the pagoda fell into disrepair in 1954 but was restored by Buddhist followers in 1961, 1969, and 1992. In 2001, Venerable Thich Minh Thiet carried out a major renovation of the entire pagoda, including the main hall, ancestral hall, and other important structures.

Architecture and Spiritual Space

The main hall of the pagoda is solidly built with brick walls and tiled roofs, featuring an ancient front hall and a bell tower. The two middle pillars of the front hall are inscribed with a couplet:

“Phuoc canh thi Tay Phuong ha can mon tien van hai bach.
An duyen vi Cuc Lac thuy luu son hau dong sa hong.”

(Translated: The blessed scenery is the Western Paradise, with a river close to the white clouds of the sea.
The serene destiny is the Pure Land, with flowing water behind the crimson sand hills.)

In front of the main hall is the Three-Entrance Gate, the Avalokiteshvara Pavilion, and a statue of Buddha Shakyamuni under an ancient Bodhi tree. To the left of the main hall are two stupas of the founding Venerable Chon Dinh and Venerable Minh Luc. The central altar enshrines the Buddha Shakyamuni, with statues of Amitabha and Maitreya below. Additionally, the pagoda houses deities such as Jade Emperor, Guan Yu, Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, and Cundi Bodhisattva.

Behind the main hall is the ancestral altar, where the images of Venerable Buu Hien, past venerables, and the ancestral founder are honored. The pagoda also preserves valuable artifacts, including five earthen statues of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, a 0.3-meter bronze statue of Ksitigarbha, an earthen statue of Mahakala, and eight wooden and earthen statues of deities. Notably, the pagoda holds an ancient Great Bell, 1.2 meters high, along with other ritual bells cast during the Duy Tan era and a sacred bowl cast in the year Dinh Mui.
