Octopus is a familiar seafood to local people in Phan Thiet. There are many dishes from octopus, it could be grilled with chilli sauce, grilled with salt and chilli, steamed with ginger or used to make salad. However, according to the restaurants in Phan Thiet city, the most favorite dish of tourists and young people in this coastal city is octopus grilled with chilli and lemongrass.
To make good dishes, they choose octopuses that are about 200 to 300 gram in weight. Octopus’ meat will be rubbed time and again with chilli and lime till it’s clean. After that, they wash it with water, leave it to drain, then cut it into pieces. Pieces of octopus will be seasoned with chilli and lemongrass about 20 minutes before being grilled on hot charcoal. After about 10 minutes, brown grilled octopus will pervade the air with appetizing aroma.
As a pungent dish, octopus grilled with chilli and lemongrass is served with Vietnamese daikon and carrot pickles, Vietnamese coriander, cucumber and chilli sauce. In Phan Thiet, the dipping sauce can be made from salt, green chilli powder and some lime juice. The pungent chilli, coriander and sour ingredients make pieces of grilled octopus more delectable.
