Banh Hon (the tapioca cake with shredded coconut) - A dessert of the childhood memory

( - On a cooling afternoon day, when strolling around Phan Thiet city, I suddenly heard sound of the street vendor “Bánh Hòn không? Who wants to eat tapioca cake? ”. That is a dish which is strange and familiar feeling to me. Strange feeling is because it was such a long time, now I hear about the simple dish of the my homeland. familiar feeling is because it sticks to my beautiful childhood memories with the round –shaped dessert.

The cake is made of tapioca which is mixed by different colors. After making round like a small marble and cooking. When the cake gets cool, we mix it with shredded coconut. Banh Hon is served with the white sugar. The cake is a little tough, sweet, a little greasy… All create a typical and favorite dessert for the students and children.
In the memory of many student generations  like me, Banh Hon was very accustomed to them when they was at school. Bon Hon is not only a dessert it is also an art painting of food with the coordination of different colors. It looks eye-catching and attracts many students.
Now, Banh Hon is still sold at Phan Thiet market, some of the tourist destinations or on some food street in the center of  Phan Thiet city. It just only costs 10.000 VND/portion.
Being not a great delicacy, but Banh Hon will definitely bring you with all the enjoyments  by its simple feature and the fragrant flavor when having chance to travel to the coastal city of Phan Thiet.
